Hamilton

This past week's film Hamilton was indeed an adventure in seeing. If the colors hadn't been bold and beautiful and the framing so nice I would have been more frustrated with the lack of completed narrative. At the end of the film I was left hanging...where was Joe going on the bike, were the flowers for Lena? Why does she live at his mother's house and why doesn't he like to talk to her and come around more to spend time with their child. These things, like all the other story lines were pared down to the simplest terms yet being THAT pared down left more questions than anything. I am going to give the benefit of the doubt in that this was the artist's intention, to create intentional ambiguity. He had a purpose in doing this, but I am so convention oriented that it left me wanting to know the ending. :) Overall it felt like a "day in the life of" in real time. In real life we don't have pat endings after 90-120 minutes, we simply live the day and then the next. If this is the intention of the piece then it was very successful.

I really enjoyed the bold use of color, I didn't mind the somewhat emotionless acting because to me they felt like real people (rather than just really poor non-actors), the framing was lovely and the setting was lovely. Overall I enjoyed this film, though at parts it moved too slowly for my attention span.
